Papua

Papua is a province that has the widest area across Indonesia. It is located on Papua Island. On the East of Papua, there is New Guinea Country or East New Guinea. It's consist of two provinces, Papua with its provincial Capital of Jayapura and West Papua with its capital Manokwari.

This province is comprised of 29 sub-districts and very famous for its gold mine operated by Freeport. Asmat tribe in Papua is best known by many people.

The peoples of Papua comprise more than 250 sub-groups, the most famous are the Dani and Asmat who produce some of Papua's finest wooden carvings.

A Diverse array of natural attractions, including birds and other animals found nowhere else in the world and the culture of its indigenous inhabitants remain largely intact within the lands wild and largely unexplored natural beauty, of prehistoric valleys and gorges, powerful rivers and dark, imprenetrable primeveral forest.

Raja Ampat Marine Tourism

Papua is gaining the world's attention as one of the regions in the world with the highest biodiversity, particulary underneath the rich waters. The Bird's Head Peninsula in West Papua hold an abudance of unique species of fish and other marine life that makes for spectacular diving experience. Cendrawasih Bay holds the largest marine park in Indonesia. Wai Island Base Camp in Sorong is home to sharks and rays, whales, dolphins, tutles, giant clams and schools of snappers, parrot fish, surgeon fish, and many more. The jewel of Papua diving adventure is Raja Ampat Islands off the northwest coast of Papua with diverse range of diving sites: from shallow bays, lagoon channels bordered by rainforest, rock islands and offshore reefs which are habitat to the world's most diverse species of marine flora and fauna.

Nature tourism is an appealing attraction to visit in Papua, with Raja Ampat as one of the most interesting places because it consists of a group of islands that close together. Administratively, the cluster islands are situated in Raja Ampat Regency, West Papua Province, which now considered as destination for divers who are interested in the beauty of underwater scenery.

Lorentz National Park

Apart from Raja Ampat, other interesting nature tourism is Lorentz National Park. This national park is the largest national park in Southeast Asia. Lorentz National Park defined as a World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO and Natural Heritage of ASEAN by the ASEAN countries.

Do you want to enjoy a cultural tourism? Watch Baliem Valley Festival that held by the tribes that exist in Wamena in welcoming Republic of Indonesia’s Independence Day, August 17. This festival is a traditional culture of Baliem Village community, especially Dani Tribes. Moreover, there is also another traditional ceremony such as Bakar Batu Feast. This feast is conducted by Timika Tribes in South Papua. This feast that comes from mountain tribes is the feast of thanksgiving, marked by tradition of cooking food on rock.

Baliem Festival

Baliem Valley is a green, vast and beautiful valley located in the height of Mount Jayawijaya. It is here the Baliem Festival takes place. This festival consists of simulation war between the tribes which aims to keep and maintain the agility and quickness of each and every tribe to protect their village.

This festival is organized by the Regional Government of Jayawijaya, aiming at introducing and preserving the values and culture of the traditional tribes in the valley of Baliem. This festival is enlivened by performances of arts and culture, including Papuan dances and traditional music performance and many more.

Baliem Festival

In this festival tourists can experience different ethnic groups of Wamena highland and Baliem Valley, such as Dani, Lani and Yali tribe. Those three tribes are brought together in the celebration of this yearly festival.

Simulation of war between tribes is held for two days and it involves 24 groups of 30 to 50 soldiers each. The war simulation is accompanied by Papuan traditional music instrument made of wood called Pikon.

Aside from all of that, we can find competition of sege, archery competition which are made available especially for the foreign tourists as a token of appreciation to their presence in the festival. Apart from that, for those are willing to do so, tourists are given the chance to experience to become a real Papuan by wearing traditional cloth known as koteka. Their skin will also be made darker so that the perfection of being a Papuan can be achieved.

The purpose of this festival is to promote Papua economic potential so investors or traders will do their business here.
